Cinderella is a fairy tale that teaches us how to build our own worth. She as an archetype has various meanings that we use daily and see in various movies.
So, what does the image of Cinderella represent in our culture?
When I ask people what Cinderella means to them, they usually say this is a story about a modest, hard-working and beautiful girl who worked hard until a prince saved her and took her with him to a better life.
Is your explanation of Cinderella similar?
I still often hear that women want to have Cinderella’s wedding, shoes, dress… An ideal we follow but it does not have anything to do with a fairy tale.
Why is her name Cinderella?
Her name derives from the word “cinders” and it is a symbol for a girl covered in ashes.
Through her life, Cinderella washes off the cinders of expectation, the labels of people around her and the fact what place she was given. She teaches us that we can wash the cinders off and move to a better life.
In my explanation of the fairy tale I explain cinders as opinions of others about you that you have taken as your own. As a kind of labels that you allow to determine what you will think of yourself and how you will feel.
If you are covered in them, you are Cinderella.
If in your opinion Cinderella is hard-working, good, modest, and beautiful, then these are some of the labels you wear and in which you believe.
These characteristics are not exactly bad, but it is important to be aware what these words mean.
What could you understand under the symbol of Cinderella?
- What are your standards for hard-working, good, smart, beautiful?
- In your opinion, what do you have to do to reach these standards?
- How often do you consider yourself not good, beautiful, smart, modest, or hard-working enough? In what fields?
This is all part of your Cinderella who is trying to discover who she is and how much she thinks she is worth.
Cinderella as an archetype is a person who gets to know her inside, grows up, gets acquainted with her own feelings, beliefs, patterns and what she is going to do with her life.
Think about where you live her.
Will you stay where you have been put by others or will you take your own path to a better life?
